Estate Southgate Farms is a young, optimistic,
community-friendly organic vegetable farm on the island of St. Croix.
The farm has a few fulltime farmers, some part-time workers and a volunteer
program. They participate in school outreach programs and offer tours
of their farm. Southgate uses organic growing methods - this means growing
food naturally without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Southgate’s logo needed to communicate their friendliness, their location, and their non-chemical growing practices. A handwritten logotype has the feel of a handpainted roadside sign. The ladybug on a green “leaf” map of St. Croix symbolizes Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an organic farming technique which uses “good bugs” to eat bad bugs (bad bugs are insects that cause crop damage, which would usually be controlled by harmful chemical pesticides). The idea that an insect can be friendly, and can live in harmony with food crops, is a visual metaphor for organic farming. As part of the playful identity, cartoon ladybugs appear as illustrations on signage and print materials such as pricelists and flyers. |
