Despite the power and flexibility of digital imaging tools available to the modern graphic designer, sometimes the only way to create an image is with the old school tools of the hand. In this case, the client’s concept of a row of cavorting tortoises as his identity needed to be illustrated conventionally as lineart and then digitized for the printing of letterhead, envelopes, business cards and other logo applications. This gave the look of old engravings, which we just couldn’t perfect using digital photo editing effects. The client lent me one of his South American Red-Footed tortoises as a live model, and I drew and photographed her in a series of studies for the final artwork, done in pen and ink on bristol with gouache. As an identity, the tortoises are flexible, whimsical, unique to and representative of Mount Victory Camp itself. They are applied both as a unit and as individual icons in various identity and advertising products. |
