art supply list for watercolor workshop

Basic Drawing Supplies:

  • Pencils
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • Soap eraser or Mars White Vinyl Plastic eraser
  • Sketch Book(we will only need 5 to 10 pages so bring your current sketch book if it has room in it)

Paper
I use Arches but any high quality paper will do.

  • 140lb 10"x14" cold press watercolor block
  • 140lb 10"x14" hot press watercolor block

If you can’t find watercolor blocks then similarly sized sheets can be used.

15 sheets of each type will be enough for the class. It’s important to bring both cold press and hot press paper so we can practice with their particular textures.

Brushes
I use sable and sable/nylon brushes.
The brushes have to have a good spring to them.
One of each of the following is optimal:

  • #0 round brush
  • #2 round brush
  • #8 round brush
  • 3/4" flat brush(also called “sky” brush) a must-have for this class!!!!
  • 3/4" long bristle flat brush (also called “one stroke” brush)
  • Paints
I use Winsor & Newton but any high quality brand will do. The following is my basic palette. Colors marked ** on the list will probably get used a lot so I recommend that you bring larger tubes of those.

    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Burnt Umber
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Hookers Green
    • Prussian Blue
    • Cadmium Orange
    • Magenta
