Ceremonial Arch
sculptural installation
St. Croix, USVI
First created January
2001

In honor of the wedding of an old schoolmate, local St. Croix artist Luca Gasperi created a one-of-a-kind wedding ceremony arch constructed of driftwood bamboo, coral and sea fans, palm fronds and local flowers.

The arch is a unique sculpture crafted to fit together with carpenter's joinery, built entirely of natural elements of the island for its structure. Its simple lines create a special, handcrafted, formal yet Caribbean feel for a sea-side wedding service or other ceremony. Not visible in these photos is the conch shell walkway down the bridal aisle to the arch.

The artist's choice of materials is symbolic. "The driftwood gathers on our island beaches after a long journey at sea. The bamboo represents flexible strength; bamboo is stronger than steel. The local frangipani flower, with its heady fragrance, represents romance. The bouganvillea is a plant known for its bright flowers and ability to weather storms and droughts. The palm leaves, coral and conch shells represent our island," explains Luca. "The bamboo elements are made to fit together snugly and securely, using traditional old woodworking techniques."

Custom made arches like this one shown are available for weddings and other events. It can take the artist up to a month to collect the elements to build the arch and conch shell walkway. Speak with your wedding coordinator, or call the artist directly at (340)773-2386 to discuss the needs of your event.
